My band actually struggled with this last year when we were tracking a new EP. We wanted that classic metal punch but didn't want to sound like we'd been hit by a truck.
What worked for us was putting the raw tracks through a temporary brickwall limiter just to see where the ceiling was, then backing off *slightly* before finalizing. That way we kept the aggression but avoided the "auditory concussion" vibe YouTube seems to love. It's a fine line, but the key is to make sure the snare still cuts through instead of just blurting out white noise.
