Sensors promising 24/7 metabolic tracking—how much of this is real science vs. marketing hype? Any red flags in the hardware design when it comes to accuracy vs. battery life trade-offs?

I remember testing a few of these wearable metabolic trackers like the Whoop Strap vs. an older Oura Ring. The Whoop’s optical heart rate sensor worked okay for trends but had wild swings during arm-heavy workouts—like it totally missed intensity spikes when I was boxing. Meanwhile the Oura’s BIA sensors were more stable for resting metabolism but lagged hard during HIIT. Hardware trade-off is brutal—Whoop’s tiny battery forces 5-day stints but sacrifices sensor array density; Oura’s chunkier build eats battery faster yet gives more granular HRV data. Accuracy? Both feel like rough sketches of your actual physiology. Unless you’re tracking big lifestyle changes over months, the noise swamps the signal.
