I'm trying to understand how the Linux kernel's scheduler picks the next task to run. Specifically, how do the various scheduling classes like CFS and real-time interact, and what factors influence priority decisions? Is it mostly CPU usage, nice values, or something else? Would love a clear breakdown of the algorithm and any practical tips for tuning it.

Honestly I'm more into watching trailers than kernels, but from what I gathered CFS picks the task with the smallest virtual runtime while the real‑time classes (SCHED_FIFO/ RR) pre‑empt everything based on static priority and deadlines. So CPU usage and nice values only matter for CFS; tweak the nice or weight if you want more share, but real‑time tasks will always jump the line 😅🚀
