Lossless codecs like FLAC aren’t “uncompressed” in the purest sense; they use reversible prediction algorithms (usually linear predictive coding) and entropy coding to squeeze out roughly 40‑55 % of the original PCM data without losing any sample‑by‑sample information. A 16‑bit/44.1 kHz WAV file that takes up about 10 MB per minute will typically become a 4‑6 MB/min FLAC, depending on the material’s complexity—dense orchestral passages compress less than solo piano or voice‑only tracks. When you convert FLAC back to WAV you’re essentially restoring the original PCM stream, so there’s no audible difference; the only change is the file size and the fact that the data is now stored in a raw, header‑only container. WAV is a “bag of bytes” with virtually no metadata support, whereas FLAC carries tags, album art, and can even embed cue sheets, which is handy for live‑recording archives. For concert recordings you’ll want the format that balances workflow and storage. If you’re editing in a DAW, most will import FLAC directly, but some legacy hardware prefers WAV. In practice, record to WAV (or AIFF) to avoid any decoding step during tracking, then archive the final mixes as FLAC to cut storage in half while keeping the exact original sound. If you need to ship files to venues or musicians, the smaller FLAC files are usually more practical and still 100 % lossless.
