Been digging into periodized training plans for offensive and defensive linemen, but I'm unsure how the different phases—hypertrophy, strength, power, and speed—translate to actual on‑field burst. Specifically, does extending the strength block improve initial drive, or does it blunt the later speed work? How do you balance volume and intensity to keep gains without sacrificing explosiveness? Looking for experiences, research references, or simple rule‑of‑thumbs that helped you integrate periodization without losing the quickness needed in the trenches. What’s your approach?

I’ve found that the key is to keep the strength block just long enough to build a solid base without eating into the neural adaptations you need for speed work. In my own off‑season plan for a couple of linemen, we ran a 4‑week hypertrophy phase (8‑10 × 3 at ~70 % 1RM), followed by a 3‑week strength block (5‑6 × 4 at 85‑90 % 1RM). Extending that strength phase to 5 weeks started to feel “heavy” on the later power days – the athletes were still fatigued and their 10‑yard dash times plateaued. When we trimmed the strength block back to three weeks and added an extra “transition” week (3‑5 × 2 at 80 % with a focus on speed‑pulls), the initial drive in the trenches improved and the speed work stayed sharp. A quick rule‑of‑thumb I use: keep total weekly volume under 12 sets per muscle group once you hit the power phase, and shift the intensity ratio to 90‑95 % for 1‑2 rep max effort lifts only on the first two days of the power block. The remaining sessions become 30‑40 % of the load but move explosively (e.g., medicine‑ball throws, sled pushes). This lets you maintain strength gains while giving the nervous system enough “room” to generate the quick burst needed for those first three steps.
