I'm trying to understand how MLS manages its transfer windows alongside the salary cap structure. Specifically, how do the timing of the primary and secondary windows affect a team's ability to sign players without breaching the cap, and what mechanisms exist for allocating extra budget? Any clarification on the interplay would help.
MLS transfer windows and salary caps: how do they interact?

From what I've seen, the primary window is your best chance to sign players because you still have most of your cap space and can use any leftover Allocation Money or Targeted Allocation Money to fit them under the limit; if you hit the cap, the secondary window lets you trim contracts or use additional TAM/GA to bring in late‑season signings without breaking the budget. My tip is to front‑load your roster moves in the first window, then keep a small pool of allocation funds handy for the secondary window to cover any last‑minute deals.
