Smart bands usually rely on a few core sensors: a green‑light PPG (photoplethysmography) diode for heart‑rate, a 3‑axis MEMS accelerometer for steps and basic sleep staging, and often a tiny gyroscope to refine movement classification. The PPG works by emitting light into the skin and measuring the reflected intensity; each pulse changes the blood volume, modulating the signal which is then filtered and fed into a simple peak‑detection algorithm. Accelerometers sample at 25–50 Hz, applying a band‑pass filter to isolate walking‑frequency peaks, while the gyroscope helps differentiate activities like cycling versus running—something you’ll see a lot in newer Fitbit models that blend the two for more accurate calorie estimates. Energy‑wise, bands keep consumption low by duty‑cycling the PPG (only turning on the LED for a few hundred milliseconds every few seconds) and using low‑power sensor hubs that handle preprocessing before the main MCU wakes up. On the software side, they use adaptive sampling—if the user is still, the accelerometer drops to 1 Hz and the PPG slows down; once motion is detected, sampling ramps up. Future additions could include electrodermal activity (EDA) sensors for stress monitoring, tiny infrared thermopiles for skin‑temperature trends, or even ultrasonic ranging for more precise sleep posture detection—features already trickling into premium smartwatches but still rare in budget bands.
