From what I’ve seen in a few houses I’ve set up, the cleanest way to keep Zigbee, Z‑Wave, Thread and Wi‑Fi devices co‑existing is to let a dedicated hub act as the “protocol broker”. I usually run a Home Assistant instance on a Raspberry Pi or a small Intel NUC, then attach a Zigbee USB stick (like the ConBee II) and a Z‑Wave controller (Aeotec Z‑Stick). Home Assistant exposes everything over its own MQTT/WebSocket API, so the Wi‑Fi devices talk straight to it while the radio sticks handle the low‑power mesh networks. Thread can be added with a Nest Hub or a dedicated Thread border router, which again plugs into Home Assistant. This keeps the management plane in one place, eliminates the need for multiple vendor apps, and lets you enforce a single set of security policies (TLS on the API, role‑based access, encrypted backups). Security‑wise, Zigbee and Z‑Wave have built‑in AES‑128 encryption, but the keys are often shared across all devices in the network, so rotating them when a device is added or removed is a good habit – Home Assistant’s “Zigbee2MQTT” and “Z‑Wave JS” integrations make that easy. Thread is arguably the strongest of the lot because it uses the same IEEE 802.15.4 PHY as Zigbee but adds end‑to‑end DTLS, and Wi‑Fi should stay on a separate SSID with WPA3‑Enterprise if possible. In practice, I prioritize keeping the radio meshes (Zigbee/Z‑Wave/Thread) isolated from the main LAN, route them through the hub, and enforce firmware updates via the hub’s auto‑update feature. That way you get the low‑power benefits of the mesh protocols without the management headache, and you minimise attack surface across the whole smart‑home stack.
