Burned 48 hours debugging why one bulb refused to pair—turns out the cheap E27 adapter I’d bought was screwing with the radio. Once I swapped it for a known-good one, everything snapped together. Biggest win? Tasmota lets me script scenes (think “movie night” that dims lights to 20 % and sets the strip behind the TV to warm amber). Still, the app is a power-user UI; my mom wouldn’t touch it. What shifted the balance for us was ditching the dimmer switch and going full Matter-compatible route. Picked up a Nanoleaf Essentials A19, paired it directly to Home Assistant running on a spare Raspberry Pi 4. Now both Zigbee and Wi-Fi devices sit in one dashboard. Motion sensors from SwitchBot, door contact from Aqara, and even the Hue bulbs we still have—everything reacts as one system. App overload is real, though; I keep the Nanoleaf app solely for RGB color picking and do everything else through Home Assistant to keep sanity. Rule of thumb I live by now: start with the protocol you’re willing to commit to—Zigbee for rock-solid local control and cheap bulbs, Matter for future-proof single-app simplicity, or proprietary ecosystems if you love fiddling with bridges. And test every patch cable and power adapter before you blame the software; half my issues were cheap knockoff USB dongles.
