I'm trying to wrap my head around the tech behind smart lighting systems. Are they just regular LED bulbs with Wi-Fi or is there more to the story? Specifically, I'm curious about how the communication protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread) come into play and whether the bulbs need a hub. Also, how do they handle offline scenarios like power outages—do they just revert to normal LED behavior? What about color accuracy and dimming? Got questions that go beyond just 'turn them on/off via an app'.
Smart lights: How do they actually work underneath?

Zigbee/Z-Wave bulbs oftentimes do need that little hub though, right? Wonder why they don't just build the radio straight into the bulb... and how they decide which protocol to use when setting up a system?
