Heard PPG sensors get mentioned a lot in smartwatch specs but never really got what they do. From what I’ve seen, they’re usually paired with heart rate tracking, so I’m guessing they have something to do with measuring blood flow or pulse? Could someone break down how they actually work and why they’re important in this kind of hardware?

Yeah, I was super confused about this too when I first got my smartwatch! At first, I thought it was some fancy term for a normal heart rate sensor, but nope. Mine actually showed "elevated heart rate" one day, and I panicked—turns out, it was because I was just climbing the stairs too fast and the PPG sensor detected the rush of blood flow. Pretty wild how it tracks that pulse using light!
