Heard this question from a buddy last week—he was on the fence about getting a Taycan after his last diesel started coughing up more fumes than a volcano. Thing is, the range numbers on paper look great, but 500 km real-world in winter temps drops to 350 km with the heater blasting and 70 mph on the autobahn. His first proper road trip from Munich to Hamburg (650 km) turned into a 7-hour stop-light marathon because every fast-charger from Nuremberg to Hanover was either offline or single-stall occupied by some Model Y pulling 350 kW that never actually pulls above 150 kW. His range dropped to 220 km on the return leg with -8 °C, and he swore he’d never leave the city again. Funny enough, after that nightmare, he did the math: 95 % of his drives are under 100 km round-trip and his wallbox at home charges overnight. The EV became the hero in city traffic where the regen braking keeps his brake pads from ever wearing out, and the instant torque means the little turbo he left behind can’t even keep up accelerating from the lights. So, practicality for daily short hops? Solid win. Long-range reliability when the sun ain’t shining and half the chargers have one cable in use and one broken? Still feels like a gamble. I still think the tech is here, but the infrastructure isn’t—not everywhere. Give it another two years and road trips might actually be smoother than diesel stops; until then, I’d say EVs are mainstream for folks who can charge at home or work, and a niche gamble for everyone else.
