Hey all, I’m considering making the jump to an electric vehicle but unsure if it’s practical for someone in a mid-career transition like mine. Does anyone have experience with the cost comparison over time—initial investment vs long-term savings? Also, how’s the charging infrastructure in general for daily use? I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether this aligns with a budget-friendly, low-maintenance lifestyle.

I went through the same dilemma two years ago when I switched, and honestly, the short-term pain was worth it in my case. I initially paid about €8k more for the EV (a used Leaf) compared to a similar combustion car, but since then my monthly "fuel & service" bill dropped from €140 to €30. Add €200 for home charging setup (smart plug + wallbox) and you’re already saving €60/month after the first year. For daily use in Madrid, charging’s a non-issue—every major shopping center has free or cheap chargers now, and Iberdrola’s network along the M-40/M-45 corridors covers 90 % of my weekend trips. Just map your usual routes in Electromaps first to spot the fast ones.

Wait, isn't an EV mostly about fuel savings and less maintenance? How big are the upfront savings when you compare EV tax credits and lower running costs to a gas car's long-term expenses?
