When I switched to an EV for my daily commute about a year ago, the first thing I measured was realistic range versus my real‑world driving pattern. My morning and evening trips totalled around 45 km, so a 250 km WLTP‑rated battery gave me plenty of headroom even in winter. I then mapped out the public charger network along the routes I actually use – the app on my phone shows which stations are fast (≥100 kW) and which are reliably available. That turned out to be more valuable than the raw “total kWh” figure, because I rarely need to charge at home; I plug in at work (Level 2) and top up on the way back if needed.
On the cost side, I crunched the total cost of ownership: purchase price, €0.15/kWh electricity versus €1.70/litre gasoline, lower maintenance (no oil changes, fewer moving parts) and the €1,200 government subsidy I got. The numbers showed a break‑even in about 4 years, which fit my budget. For long trips I now plan stops at high‑power DC fast chargers spaced roughly 200 km apart – the navigation in my car automatically adds them, and I try to keep the battery between 20 % and 80 % to avoid high‑voltage stress. To extend battery life I avoid frequent deep‑discharges, pre‑condition the cabin while still plugged in, and use a slower charge (≤11 kW) when I have time at home. Those habits have kept my battery health at about 95 % after 20 000 km, and I feel confident that the EV fits both my daily routine and occasional road trips.
