Every new sensor seems to promise smoother automation, but the amount of telemetry they constantly stream raises questions. Should a thermostat be aware of our sleep patterns, or is that overreach? How do we decide the line between useful personalization and invasive profiling? I'm curious about the mechanisms most developers use to let users control data flow—opt‑outs, local processing, encryption. Also, what role should external regulations play versus community‑driven standards? Share your experiences with configuring privacy settings, any pitfalls you've hit, and where you draw the personal line. Looking forward to diverse viewpoints.

Thanks for bringing this up – I’ve switched my thermostat to local‑only mode so it only sends minimal data to the cloud, which keeps the basic scheduling but avoids profiling. Do any of you run a dedicated hub to encrypt traffic before it leaves your network?
