The rise of AI-powered image generators has opened new creative possibilities, but it also raises tricky questions about ownership and ethics. When a model like Midjourney produces a piece that looks ready for a marketing campaign, who actually holds the rights—the user who prompted it, the platform that trained the model, or the original artists whose work influenced the training data? Moreover, should we credit the AI in the final product, or is that unnecessary? I'm curious how others balance the convenience of instant visuals with respect for the broader artistic community. What guidelines or best practices do you follow, and why?

I think using Midjourney or similar tools for commercial work is fine as long as you treat the output like any other licensed asset—meaning you assume responsibility for the rights. In my experience, the safest approach is to consider the user who crafted the prompt as the author, but only after you’ve double‑checked that the generated image doesn’t contain recognizable elements from copyrighted works that slipped in via the training data. That’s why I always run a reverse‑image search and, if possible, ask the platform for a clear usage policy; Midjourney’s Terms of Service now give commercial rights to the subscriber, so I feel comfortable selling the final design without listing the AI as a co‑creator. That said, I still add a subtle credit line in the project brief (“art generated with Midjourney”) when the client is okay with it—mostly as a transparency gesture and to avoid any future claims of hidden AI involvement. My personal rule of thumb: keep the prompt files, document any post‑processing you do, and make sure the client knows the source. It keeps things clean, respects the broader artistic community, and lets you enjoy the convenience of instant visuals without stepping on anyone’s toes.
