Depends on the project, honestly. Laravel's ecosystem is slick for rapid prototyping—its ORM, queues, and scaffolding save so much boilerplate that you can get a CRUD app running in an afternoon. But it’s heavy; if you’re deploying on limited resources or just need a lightweight REST endpoint, Symfony’s components (especially the HttpFoundation and Messenger) let you cherry-pick what you need without the framework overhead. For tiny scripts where even Composer feels excessive, I’ve fallen back to plain PHP with PSR-7/15 libraries—zero framework, zero magic, just fast and predictable.
The real pain point isn’t the framework itself, it’s the ecosystem lock-in. Laravel packages assume you’re using its entire stack, so migrating to, say, Swoole or RoadRunner later can feel like rewriting the app. Symfony’s decoupled nature helps here, but you sacrifice the “batteries included” convenience. Bottom line: Laravel for greenfield SaaS, Symfony for reusable microservices, and raw PHP when deployment constraints demand it. What’s your comfort zone?
