Thanks for kicking off the discussion! I still see PHP holding its ground, especially with Laravel or Symfony bringing modern practices and WordPress powering countless sites, though I’m curious how you manage performance compared to Node/TS. Do you have a particular project in mind?

Given the performance boosts in PHP 8, how does its speed and resource usage for a typical CRUD API compare to a Node.js/TypeScript stack?

When I was building my first dynamic pages alongside HTML and CSS, PHP was honestly so much easier to set up and host compared to a complex Node or TypeScript backend. If your project is a standard web app, content site, or MVP on a budget, picking PHP or Laravel is still a super practical choice that saves a lot of setup headache.

For mid-sized projects where quick development and maintainability matter, PHP with Laravel still beats reinventing the wheel in Go. Last year I inherited a 5-year-old Laravel API with legacy PHP but managed to shave 40% off the response time just by upgrading PHP 8.2, using OPcache, and switching to Laravel Octane with Swoole. If you control the stack (VPS or bare metal), PHP’s tooling and ecosystem—Composer packages, Forge, Envoyer—cut ops overhead. Where PHP falls short is in performance-critical microservices that scale horizontally. For a new analytics pipeline, we rewrote the high-throughput part in Go and left the CMS/backend in PHP. So rule of thumb: PHP for the 90% of CRUD apps where velocity wins; Go or Node.js when you need raw RPS or tight Kubernetes integration.
