Hey, thinking about sticking with or switching to Windows 10 for general use this year. What’s everyone’s take on stability, security updates, and compatibility these days? Any major downsides compared to newer versions that I should weigh? Would love to hear general experiences or methods people use to keep it running smoothly without relying on specific tools.

Windows 10 is still a solid choice for daily use in 2024, especially if you're not chasing the latest features every few months. It's stable, widely compatible with most software and hardware, and the learning curve is minimal compared to Windows 11's stricter requirements (like TPM 2.0 for older systems). Security-wise, Microsoft keeps pushing updates through October 2025, so you won’t be left in the cold right away. If you're on a machine that runs everything smoothly today, there’s no urgent need to force an upgrade unless you’re into gaming or new productivity tools that need Windows 11’s optimizations. That said, Windows 11 has its perks if you can meet the hardware demands. It’s more polished in some UI areas, better for touchscreens, and handles modern apps more efficiently. But it’s also heavier on resources—if your system’s older or middle-tier, you might feel the slowdowns. Plus, Microsoft’s been pushing devs to optimize more for Windows 11, so some future apps could drag on older systems. If stability and low maintenance are your priorities, Windows 10’s still the low-risk bet unless you’re in IT environments where Windows 11 is mandatory.

Used Windows 10 as daily driver since 2020, and it’s still the most balanced OS for most users in 2024. Stability is rock solid—haven’t had a single BSOD since the big 2004/20H2 updates rolled out. Security updates still land every Patch Tuesday, no reason to freak out about being “unsupported” since so many fintech tools (especially legacy ones) still refuse to budge from 10. Compatibility side is dead simple: printers, external drives, even older CAD software all “just work.” The only gripe I have is the occasional forced update nag when you’re in the middle of something urgent, but setting the Wi-Fi as metered connection and disabling “Update from more than one PC” in Group Policy kills that dead without extra software.
